October: You Don’t Have to Earn Healthy Love

Healthy love isn’t a reward for overgiving, overexplaining, or overextending yourself.

There comes a point when you have to ask yourself a different question.

Not, “What more can I do to make this work?”

But, “Why am I working this hard to receive what should feel mutual?”

For many of us, especially women who have spent years being the dependable one, the understanding one, the one who gives people another chance, love can quietly become something we feel responsible for maintaining.

We give more.

We explain ourselves again.

We make excuses for someone else's inconsistency.

We become more patient. More available. More accommodating.

And somewhere along the way, we can start believing that if we just do enough, give enough, love enough, or prove ourselves enough, we'll finally receive the kind of love we've been hoping for.

But healthy love isn't something you earn through exhaustion.

You don't have to audition for it.

You don't have to convince someone that you're worthy of being treated with consideration.

You don't have to abandon your boundaries to prove that you care.

And you certainly don't have to make yourself smaller so someone else can feel comfortable loving you.

Healthy Love Should Feel Mutual

Healthy love doesn't mean perfect love. People will disappoint each other. Miscommunication happens. Life gets complicated.

But there is a difference between navigating life's imperfections together and constantly carrying a relationship by yourself.

Mutual love leaves room for both people to show up.

Both people communicate.

Both people make an effort.

Both people take responsibility.

Both people get to have needs.

You shouldn't have to continually overextend yourself just to keep the connection alive.

Because love isn't supposed to be measured by how much of yourself you can sacrifice.

You Don't Have to Overexplain Your Worth

Sometimes we explain ourselves because we want to be understood.

And sometimes we keep explaining because we're trying to convince someone to understand something they have already chosen not to hear.

There's a difference.

You can communicate your feelings clearly without turning your heart into a courtroom where you have to present evidence for why your feelings matter.

You can say what you need.

You can express what hurt you.

You can establish a boundary.

And then you can allow the other person to decide what they are going to do with that information.

Their response gives you information, too.

Stop Confusing Overgiving With Love

Giving is beautiful when it comes from a genuine place.

But giving becomes unhealthy when you're constantly giving in hopes of finally receiving.

Your time.

Your energy.

Your money.

Your emotional labor.

Your forgiveness.

Your patience.

Your availability.

Your understanding.

Your peace.

None of these things should have to be continuously spent to prove that you deserve to be loved.

The right relationship doesn't require you to disappear inside of your generosity.

This October, Choose Something Different

Maybe this month isn't about finding love.

Maybe it's about changing what you're willing to accept in love.

Maybe it's about realizing that peace isn't boring.

Consistency isn't asking for too much.

Clear communication isn't being needy.

Boundaries aren't punishment.

And being loved without having to constantly prove your value isn't unrealistic.

It's healthy.

You don't have to earn healthy love.

You don't have to overgive to deserve it.

You don't have to overexplain to deserve it.

You don't have to overextend yourself to deserve it.

You are allowed to be loved while still having boundaries.

You are allowed to be cared for without constantly caring for everyone else first.

You are allowed to receive.

And perhaps most importantly, you're allowed to walk away from anything that requires you to abandon yourself just to keep it.

This October, let love meet you where you are—not where you have exhausted yourself trying to become enough.

Choose peace. Choose reciprocity. Choose yourself.
